How 3D Printing came to the rescue in Fire Surveillance Drone for this final year student in Bangalore

Devesh Kiran Hegde
Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore

Captivated by UAVs, Mr.Devesh Kiran Hegde, pursued a drone-centered project in 2017 while studying in final year during hi Bachelors in Engineering program at NMIT, Bangalore. Urgency in search and rescue missions led to the “Fire Surveillance Drone” concept. Integrating thermal cameras and fire sensors, the project provided real-time intelligence on fires from an elevated viewpoint.

The project achieved manual and autonomous UAV modes, using the PX4 Pixhawk flight controller and Mission Planner software for guided operations. A dual-drone approach relayed fire data from detection to the nearest station via wireless transmission, showcasing the viability of aerial communication. One drone focused on communication and relay, while the second utilized a FLIR Lepton Thermal Camera for heat signature detection, aiding temperature differentiation.

The project faced a crucial challenge due to the delicate nature of the thermal camera. Recognizing the vulnerability of the camera and the importance of safeguarding it, the team embarked on a quest for a protective solution. A stroke of luck came their way when they stumbled upon Altem Technologies, a pioneering name in 3D printing technologies in India. The synergy between their requirements and Altem’s capabilities turned out to be a game-changer.

Altem Technologies stepped forward with a novel proposition – to 3D print a custom protective case for the FLIR camera. This innovative approach had transformative implications for the entire project. The 3D printing technology offered precision, customization, and rapid production, addressing the project’s specific needs. The inherent flexibility of Stratasys 3D printers using ABS 3D Printing materials allowed the creation of a tailor-made case that perfectly fit the camera’s dimensions and design intricacies.

In the face of time constraints, Altem’s team displayed exceptional commitment and professionalism. Within a remarkably short span of three days, they harnessed the power of FDM 3D printing ( Fused deposition modelling )to bring the protective case to life. This efficient execution provided an invaluable advantage to the project. The 3D Printer models of protective case not only shielded the thermal camera from potential damage but also enabled the team to work with confidence, knowing that their critical equipment was adequately protected.

The role of FDM 3D Printer extended beyond mere protection – it contributed to the project’s overall success by mitigating risks and ensuring uninterrupted progress. The collaborative effort between the project team and Altem Technologies exemplifies the potential of technology-driven solutions in enhancing complex projects. The individual leading the project acknowledges and expresses gratitude to the entire Altem team for their unwavering support, which played a pivotal role in realizing the project’s objectives. This experience stands as a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in the realm of advanced manufacturing.
